Project Description

The heat wave that swept Adelaide early in 2008 highlighted the inadequacy of Waterworld’s existing chainwire fence. Intruders were cutting through the chainwire fence for a late-night swim which had to be repaired on a daily basis. Broken glass was often left in the pool. Not only is a chainwire fence easily cut through it is also readily climbable and therefore not compliant with AS 1926 - Swimming Pool Safety creating a public liability risk. The council had a serious problem!

Bluedog was contracted to design and construct a ‘pool safe’ security fence which was compliant with AS 1926 and also met the council’s specific security and functional requirements. Project Specific Challenges & Innovations. Tight time frame for completion of a design & construct contract before the pool’s summer peak period – works were complete 1 week ahead of schedule.

  • Sloping terrain meant over 25 % of works were raked panels plus 2 custom raked gates.
  • Testing of panels and gates for certification to AS 1926 – Appendix A Strength and rigidity.
  • Considerable civil construction incl. concrete anti-tunneling plinth under the fence.

Added Value

The council adopted Bluedog’s recommendations to change the concrete plinth design and increase the post size to improve the strength of the installation. Savings from the improved plinth design offset the additional cost of the stronger posts.

Variations

  • Increase post thickness and improvements to concrete mow strip design - $0.6k
  • Additional fencing incl. raked panels and gates to enclose chlorine storage - $9.8k
  • Supply of spare materials for stock to replace any vandalised materials - $0.9k
